Barbara Young has been utilizing the principles of neuroplasticity since 1978, and her work has grown out of her own journey to transform her own brain. She is the founder of the Arrowsmith Program, an assessment process and suite of cognitive exercises designed to stimulate and strengthen areas of cognitive functioning that underlie a range of learning difficulties. Her work is recognized as one of the first examples of the practical application of neuroplasticity to address learning difficulties and its application has expanded to address those dealing with traumatic brain injury, addiction, cognitive decline with aging and those who want to enhance performance. Barbara is the recipient of the Leaders and Legends Innovation Award from the University of Toronto for her contribution to education.
Barbara Arrowsmith-Young is the author of “The Woman Who Changed Her Brain.” When I read this book a few years ago, I knew it was the answer to some challenges we were experiencing with one of our sons. After many years of struggling to find the right answer, it has been amazing and completely transformed his life, and by default, ours too. Barbara has been touring the world for decades, talking about the brain, neuroplasticity, and she never tires of prioritizing the message about the importance of cognitive functioning. Her vision is to put the Brain in the Education Equation. Her work begun in 1978 and is recognized as one of the first examples of the practical application of neuroplasticity to address learning difficulties. Since then, its application has expanded to address those dealing with traumatic brain injury, addiction, cognitive decline with aging and those who want to enhance performance. We covered many things, including a look at Barbara’s life, including when she understood she had a challenge with her own brain, as well as the limited possibilities placed on her from a very young age by educators. The realms of research created since this program started, showing the incredible results possible and there’s so much more to uncover. As well as where Covid fits into the mix, with neurological damage one of the findings gaining more and more attention since the beginning of the pandemic.
Barbara Arrowsmith-Young overheard her first-grade teacher telling her mom, “Barbara really isn’t going to amount to much.” Growing up, Barbara struggled to learn to read and write. Back then, there was no such term as “learning difficulty” — the understanding was that your brain was fixed forever. To Barbara, it felt like a life sentence. Today, she is known as “the woman who changed her brain.” After years of living with a diagnosed “mental block,” Barbara set out to understand why parts of her brain weren’t functioning the way they should. What she discovered changed her understanding of the brain entirely, and she knew it was her life’s work to help others overcome the learning difficulties that might be holding them back. The Arrowsmith Program is helping thousands of people worldwide reduce the factors in their life causing negative neuroplasticity so they can become effective, confident, and self-directed learners. The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast EPISODE #132 features Barbara Arrowsmith Young (she/her), the founder of The Arrowsmith School and Programs and otherwise known as "The Woman Who Changed Her Brain and Left Her Learning Disability Behind."
Barbara authentically shares what it was like growing up with severe learning difficulties, having no known diagnosis at the time. She was pressed to carve and navigate her own path through feeling that she couldn’t fit in, feeling that going to school was meant to ‘feel stupid’, feeling ashamed that she couldn’t learn what others could, that at times it got so emotionally and mentally unruly that she had to fake illness so she could get out of going to school. She never told a soul what she had experienced, endured, and suffered through for decades. Barbara presented with exceptional strengths, so it was easy to mask the true struggle. Barbara shares with vulnerability emotions that emerged — hopelessness and despair, questioning how she could be successful when she often found herself guessing the answers — at times she was right and other times she was not. She expresses that what she endures had no logic in her world, unable to decode language, whether it be in reading, writing or comprehension of verbal communication. Through perseverance, she worked her process and overcame her learning difficulties when she immersed herself into the science of neuroplasticity and created meaningful work, that is her life’s work today. Her key message to listeners is that: there are solutions; there is hope and optimism in every situation if you look, so test it out and challenge what you know; never give up; keep investigating, ask questions, get curious; there is no one size fits all answer.

Such a privilege to chat with someone who is a world-renowned pioneer, researcher and authority in the area of brain training, brain science and neuroplasticity. At the age of six (in the 1950’s) Barbara was diagnosed as having a ‘mental block’, which these days would more accurately be described as, a severe learning disability. Since that time, her life has been an ongoing journey of learning, experimentation, teaching and helping others to maximise their ‘brain potential’. Enjoy.

Diagnosed in grade one as having a mental block, which today would have been identified as multiple learning disabilities, she read and wrote everything backwards, had trouble processing concepts in language, continuously got lost and was physically uncoordinated. Barbara eventually learnt to read and write from left to right and mask a number of the symptoms of her learning disabilities through heroic effort, however she continued throughout her educational career to have difficulty with specific aspects of learning.
