An innovator and author in the field of neuroeducation, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s work utilizing the principles of neuroplasticity is used worldwide to enhance cognitive functioning.
Her vision is to put the Brain in the Education Equation. Her work begun in 1978 is recognized as one of the first examples of the practical application of neuroplasticity to address learning difficulties and its application has expanded to address those dealing with traumatic brain injury, addiction, cognitive decline with aging and those who want to enhance performance. Her journey and work is documented in her bestselling book, The Woman Who Changed Her Brain and in her TEDx talk. As the Director of the Arrowsmith Program, Barbara continues to engage in research to understand how we can drive neuroplastic change in the brain to benefit learners of all ages.

After receiving his B. Ed. in 2000 from Nipissing University, Jason gained experience in both Northern Ontario and Atlanta, Georgia before joining Arrowsmith School. Jason’s life trajectory was permanently changed after becoming aware of Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s revolutionary means of addressing learning difficulties.
Since 2008, Jason has been fortunate to work with students and their families to help open doors that otherwise may have remained closed. Whether it has been in the classroom as a cognitive teacher, as a principal, or in Admissions, he has learned that being able to speak with families that are just discovering Arrowsmith for the first time is an absolute pleasure.
Jason shares, “To be able to answer questions and let students and families know that, yes, we can help, is just about one of the best feelings in helping to carry Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s work forward.”
Jason is thankful that his own children have benefited from attending Arrowsmith – the Brain Change School.
With her background in psychology and education, Tara Bonner has been with the Arrowsmith organization for 15 years: firstly as a teacher, then School Principal and now as a consultant. Prior to joining Arrowsmith, Tara taught in Canada, UK, Mexico and Chile, and from these varied experiences she saw a universal truth – that children with learning difficulties worked harder than their peers, yet still struggled to learn independently. Since then, Tara has witnessed the transformative impact that is cognitive programming. Not only for those who struggle to learn, but for anyone enhancing their capacity to learn and perform with greater ease, and joy.
In her current role, Tara speaks to professionals and educators from around the world. From here, she sees a watershed moment: where learning and neuroscience intersect, and we all elevate our experience and contribution to the world, with a stronger brain. She feels privileged to be part of these conversations, and to be part of an organization putting the Brain in Education.

Aperame-Aru Balasingam (‘Rame’ for short) is a Program Coordinator for the Arrowsmith Program. Rame’s role consists of supporting Arrowsmith-trained teachers around the globe in various capacities. Rame has completed her Masters in Developmental Psychology, and Education, focusing on Learning Disabilities, and has worked with The Learning Disability Association of Toronto for a couple of years before joining the Arrowsmith Team.
Andrea Peirson joined the Arrowsmith organization in 1998 as a cognitive teacher. Andrea trained as a secondary school teacher focusing on learning disabilities and guidance counseling.
Andrea worked in a variety of camps and organizations with youth-at-risk and noted that the young people in her midst, whether in a classroom, a tent, or a canoe all shared their struggles with learning and they were not finding answers in their schools.
Arrowsmith offered a different path for teaching these individuals that was not only helping students overcome their learning difficulties, but it was deeply satisfying as an educator to truly help those who were suffering. In her role as Project Officer, Andrea trains teachers in the Arrowsmith Program, creates professional development materials; leads the Cognitive Intensive Program, facilitates research projects and is involved in public speaking about the Arrowsmith Program.

Let’s talk about Dyslexia! Barbara Arrowsmith-Young was interviewed by Jean Harville M.Ed for her Brilliance of Dyslexia Masterclass Series. A discussion about her going ‘under the label’.
Growing up, Barbara struggled to learn to read and write. Back then, there was no such term as “learning difficulty” — the understanding was that your brain was fixed forever. To Barbara, it felt like a life sentence.
Today, she is known as “the woman who changed her brain.” After years of living with a diagnosed “mental block,” Barbara set out to understand why parts of her brain weren’t functioning the way they should.
What she discovered changed her understanding of the brain entirely, and she knew it was her life’s work to help others overcome the learning difficulties that might be holding them back.

In this Meetup, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young discusses a cognitive function framework of understanding behaviour, the principles that drive neuroplastic change, insights into learning difficulties from current imaging research and research outcomes of a neuroplastic approach to addressing learning difficulties.
Barbara Arrowsmith-Young speaks on The Engineered Mind Podcast about how she has been utilizing the principles of neuroplasticity since 1978, and how her work has grown out of her journey to transform her own brain. She is the founder of the Arrowsmith Program, an assessment process and suite of cognitive exercises designed to stimulate and strengthen areas of cognitive functioning that underlie a range of learning difficulties.
Watch Barbara present her latest research into the science of learning to an audience in Auckland, New Zealand. This presentation provides insight through a cognitive lens into a range of cognitive ‘glitches’ leading to learning challenges. It details Barbara’s journey of discovery, the lines of research she combined and the factors leading to brain change using the principles of neuroplasticity.

Barbara was a fantastic guest on my podcast. She provided valuable insight and information on the topic of neuroplasticity, which was both informative and engaging for my audience. Her expertise and passion for the subject was evident throughout the entire conversation. I highly recommend Barbara as a speaker for anyone looking to learn more about neuroplasticity and learning how to change their brains!
It was a delight to interview Barbara Arrowsmith-Young, because I had always dreamed of having a TEDx speaker on my podcast. It was hard for me to believe that she wanted to be interviewed by me at first since I was the one that usually found the interviewees to have not the other way around. Barbara was very eloquent when answering the interview questions, I had for her and her program. It was fun to learn more about The Arrowsmith Program and Barbara’s journey to creating it. I enjoyed listening to how she runs the program and what it does to help other neurodivergents like me. I wish I had her program to assist me through my education. But I am glad that I did have assistance from my family, college and the accommodations I received. It was fascinating to learn from Barbara Arrowsmith-Young about how she came up with behaviors and brain exercises for her multiple learning challenges. They reminded me of some of the ones I use for myself. I look forward to interviewing more neurodivergents like Barbara Arrowsmith-Young in the near future.
